More than 30 years ago, a man named Marco Hidalgo looked at the cloud forest surrounding him and saw something worth protecting for generations he would never meet.
Don Marco was a visionary. At a time when few people spoke of conservation, he understood something simple and profound: forests cannot survive in isolation from the people who live alongside them. So he did two things at once. He protected the land, created work opportunities for the community and opened a door for the local community to build a livelihood that depended on the forest staying protected, not on cutting it down.
That idea became the seed of what is now ONARA.
When Don Marco passed away, his daughter Camille inherited not just land, but a responsibility. She took over the stewardship of these properties carrying the same conviction her father had: that this forest was worth protecting, whatever it took.
But «whatever it took» turned out to be a lot.
These are not small properties. We're talking about more than 1,000 hectares of primary and secondary cloud forest: trails, wildlife, watersheds, an entire living system that needs active care to survive. Protecting land at this scale, quietly and privately, became harder every year. A hard question started to surface: sell, or keep protecting?
Elegimos seguir protegiendo. Pero no podíamos hacerlo solos. We chose to keep protecting. But we couldn't do it alone.
That's why ONARA exists: a nonprofit association built so this forest doesn't depend on one family's resources, but on a community of people who believe, like Don Marco did three decades ago, that some things are worth more standing than sold.
